The Silver Lake Film Festival presents:
BEYOND THE DIASPORA:
ARMENIAN FILMMAKERS FROM
AROUND THE WORLD
The program:
Armenian Cinema, much like Armenian culture, is produced both in the homeland and in the diaspora. The Armenian cinematic tradition stretches back over 90 years to 1911, when the burial of the prelate Catholicos Matheus II was captured on celluloid. The Armenian film studio Haikino began operations in Yerevan in March 1924. Since then, there have been fruitful periods and relatively difficult times in film production in the homeland, reflecting the political stability or turmoil of Armenia, the Caucasus or the broader region. In parallel, and mostly as a result of mass migration due to human and natural disasters especially after WWI, Armenians were dispersed to different parts of the world creating, an extensive diaspora, of which the United States has the highest concentration in numbers. Subsequent generations produced filmmakers scattered throughout the globe with an eclectic harvest of films. This program is a s! mall sampling of diaspora Armenian filmmakers. They come to you from France, Ukraine, the UK, Canada and the USA. Some of them treat Armenian issues, while others handle general human interest stories. Enjoy!

Simon Abkarian plays Ben Barka in:
''J'ai vu Tuer Ben Barka''
(I saw Ben Barka Get Killed)
Morocco Times 11/3/2005
Serge le Peron's film “J'ai Vu Tuer Ben Barka”, which sheds light on the enigmatic demise of the former Moroccan leading political opposition activist, Mehdi Ben Barka, was screened on Tuesday in Rabat, reported the partisan Arabic daily Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki .
J'ai vu Tuer Ben Barka, co-directed by Serge le Peron and Saîd Shimi, was broadcast Tuesday evening in Mohammed V theatre. Many politicians and human rights figures as well as ordinary citizens attended the event to see how the two directors could bring back Ben Berka to screen.
According to the directors, the film is not about Ben Barka. Le Peron said that “the film is based on the kidnapping, when Ben Barka had disappeared without trace after being picked up by French police in 1965.”
The film was based on the statement of the witness George Figon, whose “death is considered the key of the enigma,” explained Serge Le Peron. “Thanks to him, we could deduce many possibilities about Ben Barka's death,” he added.
Figon's testimony, which was published in the weekly French magazine L'express, set him back his life. Georges Figon, who had testified earlier that Oufkir stabbed Ben Barka to death, was later found dead, and ostensibly believed to have committed suicide. The directors of the film, Serge Le Peron and Saïd Smihi, chose Figon's death as a point of departure for the story. The directors have chosen the French actor Simon Abkarian, of Armenian origins, to play the role of Ben Barka. “Abkarian has a great talent, a humanity and universality. A Moroccan actor would not have such universality,” they said.
The film, being a Moroccan Spanish and French production, is planned to be simultaneously shown in France, Spain and Morocco.

An angry, tender and funny film, The Genocide in Me deals with the impact of the 1915 Armenian Genocide on the life of young filmmaker Araz Artinian, who had to carry this legacy since her childhood. In this personal journey, Artinian, torn between her father’s passionate commitment to the Armenians of the Diaspora and her own personal needs, confronts the reality of living in Canada, a melting pot of cultures, and asks herself the universal question “Where do I belong?”.
The documentary deftly weaves together 8mm film footage shot by the filmmaker’s grandfather from the 1940’s to the 1980’s in Egypt and in Canada, with riveting photographic archives of the Genocide, the filmmaker’s present-day video journals, and a deeply honest narration. Through moving interviews with the last survivors of this Genocide in the USA and through a risky trip to Turkey, Artinian goes back to the origin of her father’s obsession, an obsession that she’s convinced was born out of the Turkish denial and the fear of losing the Armenian culture.

Atom Egoyan's "Where the Truth Lies" and "American Gun" co-written by Steven Bagatourian
both premiered within minutes of each other on Tuesday night, Sept. 13
at the 30th Toronto International Film Festival. 2005
WHERE THE TRUTH LIES
|
Production Company: Serendipity Point Films
Producer: Robert Lantos
Screenplay: Atom Egoyan, based on the novel by Rupert Holmes
Principal Cast: Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, Rachel Blanchard
|
www.wherethetruthliesfilm.com
www.thinkfilmcompany.com
The title of Where the Truth Lies conjures up the elegant and seductive enigmas for which Atom Egoyan is so highly
acclaimed. Starring Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth and based on the book by Rupert Holmes, Egoyan’s latest look at the
dark secrets which animate the world is a sumptuous and suspenseful evocation of the golden age of the American
dream factory. With his trademark style, he wryly and stylishly reveals the seamy, debauched underbelly of fame. In
this haunting mystery, perverse realities are concealed behind a bright façade of prestige and stardom. Dangerously
sexual, the film is bound to create controversy.
Lanny Morris (Bacon) and Vince Collins (Firth) are the most popular entertainers in the late fifties, comedy stars
of stage and screen and the nobility of the telethon circuit. When a beautiful young woman is found dead in their
hotel room, they are seemingly innocent of wrongdoing and never charged with any crime, but the scandal forces them
to go their separate ways to pursue successful solo careers. Fifteen years later, obsessive fan and upstart reporter
Karen O'Connor (Alison Lohman) tries to uncover what happened to this deified showbiz duo. Soon, the young woman
finds herself out of her depth as she probes into the past of this pair who have never entirely given up their wanton
ways. As the film ventures into the netherworld of Lanny and Vince's sexual proclivities, Karen is confronted with
the truth that lies behind their smooth exteriors.
Firth is pitch-perfect as the alluring British straight man, while Bacon is a whirlwind of energy as his wacky
sidekick. Egoyan skilfully recreates the glossy veneer of the entertainment industry of yore in this fascinating
exploration of the gaping chasm between private identity and public persona. The film is intricately structured:
from a delicate, tangled web of competing narratives, voiceovers and flashbacks, we must glean the truth from the
fiction. As we learn more and more of Lanny and Vince’s ugly secrets, the audacious and intelligent Where the Truth
Lies takes us to places we never dreamed of - high and low - all set against the background of the glitz and glamour
of old Hollywood.
